Best & Worst Golden Globe fashion: Julianne Moore is tops; what was Jessica Chastain thinking?

Who cares who actually took home a trophy at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday night? The prime topic of conversation among most viewers on the morning-after is the red carpet fashion— and just about everyone has an opinion.

The gowns in the unusually chilly Los Angeles weather Sunday night were an eclectic mix that showcased some major fashion trends, including:

Lots of red (Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture, Claire Danes in Versace and Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta)
Lots of plunging necklines or cutouts (Katharine McPhee in Olivier Theyskens for Theory, Kristin Wiig in Michael Kors, Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen)
Lots of sheer looks (Jennifer Lopez’s Zuhair Murad, Kerry Washington in Miu Miu and Rachel Weisz in Louis Vuitton).

We asked some of Houston's most stylish trend setters to weigh in on their favorite looks of the evening. Here are their picks (from email and phone interviews):

Favorites: Julianne Moore and Kate Hudson top the list

"Julianne Moore's Tom Ford gown was sleek, modern, glamorous and FIT her! Loved her hair with it! With a plunging back, the classic French twist was just perfect. Didn't say too much nor take away from the gown. Jewels perfect: those giant diamond ears! Perfection from head to toe," said Becca Cason Thrash, who is busy planning the Liaisons au Louvre Trois gala fundraiser in Paris in June.

"I loved that statement earrings were a big trend of the night!  Most stunning earrings go to Megan Fox," said Liz Glanville, owner of DeVille Fine Jewelry and co-chair of the Passion for Fashion luncheon on Feb. 28 at the Wortham Center. "But I thought that Kate Hudson looked amazing with her sleek black low cut Alexander McQueen gownwith stunning gold accents!"

"I had three favorites from last night: Kerry Washington, Emily Blunt, and Kate Hudson," said Houston designer David Peck. "Kerry just knows how to dress with personality. In a sea of red ball gowns, her Miu Miu dress with her blunt hair was perfection and appropriate for the occasion. Emily and Kate both looked stunning and modern. There was a simplicity to each of their dresses and styling that made them stand out in the crowd."

"Julianna Marguilies, The Good Wife wore Pucci! My favorite," said 2012 Fashion Houston Style Icon Diane Lokey Farb.

"Favorites – Anne Hathaway in simple Chanel two-piece — minimal but very elegant. Prefer though, Julianne Moore in Tom Ford: really chic and thank you for wearing some stunning jewelry," said the always stylish Susie Criner.

"I liked so many of the dresses this year- Claire Danes, Kate Hudson and Sofia Vergara.  But if I had to choose one, I LOVED Kerry Washington's Miu Miu sleek and sophisticated look plus it was original.  She looked stunning," said fashion trendsetter Divya Brown.

"Fave: Hands down Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen. That dress was so chic. Everything about it and NO ONE even came close to that dress. Total stand out," said Neal Hamil, owner of Mix Model Management in New York and creative director of Fashion Houston.

"My best dressed was Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen," Penne Weidig, Tootsies senior buyer American and European collections, agreed. "She looked modern and effortless. LOVED IT!"

Lucinda Loya, who is among Houston's best-dressed women, also choseKate Hudson in McQueen. "It is classic but edgy," Loya said. "She looks like a bombshell."

"Even though there were plenty of great looks on the red carpet, my favorite would have to be Anne Hathaway in Chanel," said young Houston designer Amir Taghi. "I was obsessed with this look because of its simplicity. It had an essence of beauty and flattered her figure."

"Favorite: Anne Hathaway's white beaded Chanel was simple, elegant, a perfect fit and so suitable for her new 'Les Miz' short haircut," agreed Kay King, the retired founder of the Houston Community College fashion design program.

"My favorite was almost a tie between Julianne Moore in Tom Ford and Kate Hudson in McQueen, but if pushed against the wall, I would go with Julianne," said Roz Pactor, who writes The Chic Sheet fashion blog.

"I loved the dress because it was so sophisticated and elegant but in a modern way. I particularly loved the way Ford worked the black front with a hint of bold white in the front that revealed a white cut-out back. It gave the onlooker as much interest to look at from the back as it did the front. Also, everything about her complemented it — red lips, upsweep hair, serpentine bracelet and simple clutch. A real winner!"

"I really thought that Anne Hathaway looked fantastic in Chanel — so chic and elegant," said Tootsies store director Fady Armanious. "Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen looked so sexy and chic. And Amy Adams in Marchesa — it was strapless, simple and sexy. I liked the (dusty pink) color. She looked like an angel almost."

Elizabeth Anthony/Esther Wolf owner Julie Roberts also loved Amy Adams' look. "This exquisite form-fitting mermaid gown from Marchesa is pure elegance. I love the continuing trend of blush in couture evening wear," Roberts said.

Least favorite: It's nearly unanimous

"Worst dressed-Jessica Chastain's sea-foam green Calvin Klein gown was too drapey on top, and the color did not do anything to complement her pale complexion and flame-red hair," Glanville said.

"Least successful – Jessica Chastain in that too-blousy seafoam halter and Halle Berry’s too-much-going-on one-shoulder, high slit, wild print number," Criner said.

"HATE to say this but after she ruled the Oscars last year in the black and gold Alexander McQueen epic gown, Jessica Chastain was the biggest disappointment for me. That color only looks good on a Tiffany box, and the thick tiered halter top and shapeless skirt could not have been more unflattering! She is gorgeous and could have done sooooooo much better," said Thrash.

"My least favorite was Taylor Swift's dress which looked like a prom dress circa 1996,"  Brown said.

"Least favorite: Jessica Chastain's pale aqua halter gown by Calvin Klein that was a horrible fit, very unflattering to her figure and gave her a 'baggy boobs' look," said King.

"My worst dressed was Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein. The fit was horrible," Weidig agreed. "Everyone has a different opinion about which dress they liked but we would all agree about how a dress should fit."

"Just a comment," Weidig added. "I was shocked by how many of the women with high slit gowns were posing with their leg out a la Angelina Jolie (at last year's Oscars)!  Especially after all the jokes that were made about her!"

Among those showing lots of leg were Halle Berry in a pink patterned Versace that received near universal pans. "The pattern is dated and unflattering," Loya said. "Not age appropriate…She should know better!"

"Least Favorite (and most disappointing): Lena Dunham and Halle Berry," Peck said. "Lena looked like a grandmother of the bride in her brown ball gown. The silhouette was way too old for her. The color washed her out and made her hair look anything but fresh and cute. If you can't walk in your shoes, don't wear them —especially when no one can see them."

"Halle Berry is gorgeous and would look great in a sack, but her dated Versace gown was ill fitting and made her chest look droopy and lopsided. I love a good printed gown, but that was not one of them," Peck added.

"The look that did not please me was Halle Berry in Atelier Versace. I felt that it was not right for the occasion and better for a day out on the coast,"  Taghi said.

Roberts agreed that, "this Versace gown was a miss for Halle. It showed too much skin and did not embrace her beauty."

"Lena Dunham in Zac Posen. It was a horrible dress. It's wrong for her —wrong color, wrong cut, wrong in every way. It made her look huge. And Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera. Wrong color, wrong braided hairstyle. It made her look like the character in 'Mary Had a Little Lamb,' " said Armanious.

"Least Fave: Lucy Liu's Carolina Herrera.  She is a super nice gal and really beautiful but the print and maybe the color it just didn't WOW me. The shape of the dress; yes, absolutely," said Hamil.

On the other hand....

"Gown I loved, but I'm sure most people hated: Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera," Peck said. "Many people may have had an issue with her choice, but of all the big skirts on the red carpet, hers was the most unusual and interesting. I loved the unexpected color and print."
